News and projects

Projects
We usually have several projects current at any time. These reflect changing priorities, personal preferences and the different stages in the life-cycle of a project.

Read about them below.

Hawker Siddeley factory, Walthamstow
The Workshop has been working with Vestry House Museum and photographer Paul Tucker to produce an exhibition looking at the former Hawker Siddeley Power Transformers/Fuller Electric site in Walthamstow. There was a fascinating exhibition at the museum incorporating archive and contemporary photographs, as well as extracts from nine of the workshop's interviews.

Walthamstow Dog Track
'The Stow' - Walthamstow's iconic greyground racing stadium - closed in summer 2008, amidst genuine sadness tinged with recriminations. Now the dust has settled, we are planning a longer-term project looking at all aspects of the stadium life - working there, going there, betting, socialising and the dogs. If you have a story to tell, get in touch with us.

1948 Olympics
The 2012 Olympics will be held just a mile or two from Waltham Forest, so we have a personal interest in them. We’ve been doing some interviews of people who attended - or even took part in - those first post-war Olympics staged in a very different age  more

Pubs
A long-term project looking at the history of alcohol and pubs in Waltham Forest - someone had to do it! Published as work in progress for free download - revised and extended again in March 2008  more

Jewish History
The pattern of movement from inner London to the outer suburbs  more

New audio
We have a long-term plan to have at least 120 minutes of audio from our recordings on this site. That will take a while, but here’s a taster - a
6-minute package bringing together the sounds of Coronation Gardens as experienced by our interviewees from 1997.
Listen and enjoy.

Web publishing
Most of our new publications are published as web editions to read on-screen or print out yourself, rather than hard-copy books. You don't get a beautiful book to adorn your bookshelves, but they are accessible and free.

Web publishing also lets us republish old titles when they become out of print and produce new titles like our Stocksfield Road work from back in the 1980s which would not otherwise be available.

If you have views about our web publishing policy, let us know!
