ION TAPE2PC

tape2pc_frontctrls_med

£99

Once upon a time, when we were young, cassettes were the recording medium of choice. They might have been Hobson’s Choice (ie no choice at all) but when the only alternative was recording on reel-to-reel tape, the snazzy little Compact Cassette was the business.

But it wasn’t perfect: the tape was tiny, and to last a usable time of 60 or 90 minutes it had to move very slowly, and that meant hiss - and lots of it - as the tape moved across the read head. Cassettes got tangled and stuck, the tape snapped or twisted - and this was when they were new. Now those cassettes are up to 40 years old the position hasn’t exactly improved.

Many of us have archives of hundreds of cassettes which need digitising for long-term preservation. The process involves playing the cassette and re-recording it on a computer or digital recorder - it isn’t difficult but needs some care, and a lot of time because it’s a real-time transfer. If the cassette recording lasts 67 minutes you have to spend 67 minutes playing and recording, and turn it over half-way.

The Tape2PC makes digitising as easy as it can be: you need recording software such as Audacity or Acoustica on your Windows PC, or Amadeus on your Mac, to record the digital stream coming into the PC’s USB port from the Tape2PC. You need to set the recording software to the right level for the tape you’re digitising, and to turn it over, but apart from that you can sit back and quietly monitor what’s going on.

You can record to your Marantz 660 or 670/671 recorder too: instead of linking your Tape2PC to a computer, you just connect it with an audio lead (2 x RCA to 1 x stereo mini-jack for the PMD660 or 2 x RCA at each end for the PMD670/671) to the line in on the Marantz. You also need to choose the Line In input on your Preset or recorder.

The Ion Tape2PC has it all:
